Apps Customize How Users Read Content Online
Slate has added an Instapaper save-for-later button to its iPad application. Mr. Weisberg said this required a reader to load the original page before saving it.
“We’re still getting the page views and the ad impressions,” he said. “But certainly over time, as these services develop and start making money, it’s only reasonable they share that money with publishers whose content they’re piggybacking on.”
i don’t disagree with the reasoning about shared revenue but the big point is, how did we get here in the first place?
why can’t a publication like slate foster a reading environment on the web that wouldn’t scream for someone to use instapaper or readability?
the quote at the end of this article just screams, “yeah! give us our money b/c we create great content but don’t understand the value of creating the best context to consume it in!”
the medium is the message, mr. weisberg.
