when i was younger i struggled with the concept of tunnels. i didn’t understand that tunnels are dug in the ground below the water and i always thought they were in the water; i couldn’t figure out how they stopped the water in order to build the tunnels in the first place. i imagined workers in scuba gear and wet cement that would never fully dry. whenever we drove through the lincoln tunnel and were held up in traffic i would stare at the tiled walls and see them bursting open to drown us all.
right now i’m stuck in the tunnel, reading a manuscript and thinking about drowning.
