turning the page.

it all started as a simple internship.

tracy put in a good word and there i was cursing out NetObjects for the next 6 months.  little did i know 6 months would turn into 4+ years, but it did.  today marks the close of a big chapter in my life (pardon the bum link to science machine).

tomorrow, i’ll be joining the team at ms&l worldwide to continue my journey in the world of communications, marketing & pr.

i could write a lot but i’ll follow form and, like any good farewellsee you later,” keep this short.  although, i have to tip my hat to the following people:

  • brian & saurabh - you guys did a pretty good sell job on me that fateful weekend.  if it wasn’t for you, i might’ve been coding e-mails for 10% off your next order on gap.com (seriously).  not only that, you taught me the ways of the ‘kon and i’ve had the pleasure of working alongside a great team ever since.

there are no hard feelings, big secrets or juicy drama.  i’m just continuing the journey.  looking forward to everything each new day will teach me.

bermuda was a nice, relaxing vacation. i still need to take some more steps to reconnect with myself a bit more. some of that will be reflected here.

today marks 8 years of “having a blog.”

i probably started keeping a hand-written journal starting in the 6th grade and it took until the end of my freshman year in college before transferring that to the web, at least in the form of a blog.  i had a web site starting probably around 1993 or so.  hosted on concentric then bounced around to various free hosts such as tripod, lycos, geocities, etc.  the first domain i ever owned was about-blank.net.  i thought i was being clever opting the file name that MSFT gave to the then 404 page in IE.  i hosted a few people on there (that was the thing to do - give hosting space to other ppl).

from there i took over ratcliffe-lee.com which, i believe, was purchased in 1995 through namezero.  spending time on livejournal, then wordpress brings me to this point today.  8 years of nonsense.  mind you, it isn’t nearly as long as some of my friends and former colleagues but - regardless - i thought this should be worth noting.

one thing, as an update, that has been on my mind is the fact that my children, hopefully, will have this narrative to look back on.  they’ll be able to peer into me as a person before being their parent.  sometimes, especially within your own immediate family, it’s very hard to think about a person without considering their relationship to you.  my father was “lawrence” before he was “dad.”  same for my mother, she was “pat” before she was “mom.”

sure there are photos, sure there are stories but generations across the globe are putting their lives, in a first-person narrative, in the public domain.  sometimes we forget - that’s never happened before.

no more cheap thrills.

digg is okay.  it’s not a bad site and it has value to some people.

i just never got into it.  that doesn’t mean i won’t in the future; but it also doesn’t mean i’m going to go out of my way either.

in the meantime, i’ve blocked DiggBar on jratlee.com.  why?

quite frankly, a better argument was made.

Apr. 03 2009

i’m surprised someone hasn’t done this yet.

in addition to your requisite google analytics, i use performancing metrics to gather statistics on people visiting http://jratlee.com & http://ratcliffe-lee.com.

pMetrics sometimes provides data in a much easier-to-digest format. lots of times, you really need to do some digging on GA to find data that is relevant to the casual blogger. beyond that, one of the main reasons i keep pMetrics around is that it allows me to get RSS feeds of every visitor, search term, etc. that people use to hit my site. throughout the day, as i comb through my feeds, i’ll see the random search terms people use, where they came from, stuff the clicked on, etc. bermuda, germany, south america, sweden, etc.

sort of like the ending to jay & silent bob strike back, what if i started traveling to all the places that came to visit my site? i’m not talking about seeking these individuals out, that wouldn’t be necessary (or sane).

more about seeing the places that came to see me.

keep calm and carry on.

if you’re accessing jratlee.com directly (i.e. not through tumblr), then odds are you’re being prompted for a username and password of some sort.

just chill, and ignore it.  twitter’s API is busted at the moment so they restricted access.  it’ll fix itself soon or i’ll just break down and try to make those friendfeed badges all sexy.
