today marks 8 years of “having a blog.”

i probably started keeping a hand-written journal starting in the 6th grade and it took until the end of my freshman year in college before transferring that to the web, at least in the form of a blog.  i had a web site starting probably around 1993 or so.  hosted on concentric then bounced around to various free hosts such as tripod, lycos, geocities, etc.  the first domain i ever owned was about-blank.net.  i thought i was being clever opting the file name that MSFT gave to the then 404 page in IE.  i hosted a few people on there (that was the thing to do - give hosting space to other ppl).

from there i took over ratcliffe-lee.com which, i believe, was purchased in 1995 through namezero.  spending time on livejournal, then wordpress brings me to this point today.  8 years of nonsense.  mind you, it isn’t nearly as long as some of my friends and former colleagues but - regardless - i thought this should be worth noting.

one thing, as an update, that has been on my mind is the fact that my children, hopefully, will have this narrative to look back on.  they’ll be able to peer into me as a person before being their parent.  sometimes, especially within your own immediate family, it’s very hard to think about a person without considering their relationship to you.  my father was “lawrence” before he was “dad.”  same for my mother, she was “pat” before she was “mom.”

sure there are photos, sure there are stories but generations across the globe are putting their lives, in a first-person narrative, in the public domain.  sometimes we forget - that’s never happened before.
