Two bits →
Two bits is a colloquial expression in the United States for 25 cents. It dates from colonial days, when a common unit of currency was the Spanish milled dollar. As a way of making change, these dollars were often cut into eight pie-slice shaped pieces, called bits. Hence, two bits being a quarter dollar. see?  things were great until we started using coins.

confirmed.
friends, i’ll be traveling next week to our nation’s capital for business and pleasure.  thanksgiving with family, watching family perform and an awards luncheon.  from the district, i head to ann arbor but that is brief.  i’m back in the office on the 4th. i’ve been to washington several times and have done the requisite tourist attractions.  what is worth my time that...

Are the numbers, natural? →
robertdow: Naturally occurring numbers — like death rates, lengths of rivers, stock prices, and even electricity bills — have a rather unique distribution of leading (first) digits. Contrary to conventional wisdom, there’s not an even distribution; each digit does not have a 1 in 9, or 11%, chance of occurring.

The future of the Twin Cities media ecosystem →
I would love it very much if we stopped talking about the content we provide and begin talking about the value we provide. What I mean by this is that the pieces of content that compose our media – our articles, our broadcasts, our images – have never been what we got paid for. What that content delivered over time – understanding, expertise, perspective, entertainment, and yes, eyeballs – these...

Apple’s Modest Addition to the Upper West Side →
Mr. Johnson did concede that Apple’s 281 retail outlets are “the highest performing retail stores on the planet.” For the year ending in September, the chain had total revenue of $6.6 billion and profit of $1.4 billion. That works out to $26 million in sales per store. Mr. Johnson said that was nearly as much as the $28 million taken in by the average Macy’s, which has 30 times more...

Untangling brand and customer experience, in 10 minutes or less Does the brand define the customer experience, or is the customer experience the brand? Your work may involve both, but you probably attack problems with a bias for one or the other. a common business problem is not understanding how this works, what makes sense and what is appropriate.  not just from a communications stand-point...

Intent - and how to "Like" it
superamit: gustafalstromer: Hoan Ton-That is one of the smartest people I know. Earlier today we spoke about how the social gaming/virtual goods companies could save the incentivized offer industry which have had a bad week. The offer industry is built on the concept of product bundling. Andrew Chen wrote a great post about here so wont go into the details. In search marketing we’ve learned...

–  Design Is The Art of Science by Bruce Mau in a great new book, Glimmer. I think this is so fundementally important for all of us to understand and put into practice in our work. (via wearethedigitalkids) bruce is the man.  i have a book that isn’t readily available elsewhere.  his firm...

Three Paradoxes of the Internet Age →
In the circles that I travel the Internet is often breathlessly embraced as the herald of all things good; the bringer of increased choice, personal empowerment, social harmony…and the list goes on. And yet, as with any powerful technology, the truth of its consequences eludes such a singular and happy narrative. for example (which is why i’m an advocate of a bit more conscious...

Radical Presentism →
syntheticpubes: When he’s not jacking off to steampunk bullshit, Cory Doctorow can write some pretty compelling sentences. This particular essay neatly lays out the reasons I value Science Fiction. (Please no wedgies.) Mary Shelley wasn’t worried about reanimated corpses stalking Europe, but by casting a technological innovation in the starring role of Frankenstein, she was able to tap into...

Crowd Sourcing A Tagging Essay →
I have an idea for an essay that connects new services Twitter Lists and Gawker Forums. In one sense, these are merely extensions of tagging and folksonomies popularized by Flickr and Delicious. But there’s something else going on here: tagging not just as taxonomy but as content generation. But I don’t have time to write this essay, so someone please do it for me. well, rex, you...
